I'm more suspicious of the line, too. I had kinda overlooked that in the initial post - the crackling sound instantly reminded me of the sounds my turbo made, and that's what my mind went to. I'm sure you'll find it to just be a leaky turbo coolant line, since a blown turbo likely wouldn't spew as much smoke under the hood, but rather through the exhaust.
